Further information

Embark on a journey through the annals of time as we unveil the captivating narrative of Valencia's old town, a historical tapestry woven over 2,000 years. The city's ancient heart, often regarded as its most prized possession, traces its roots to the Romans who first set foot here in 138 BC, naming it "Valentia." As you navigate the enchanting labyrinth of twisted and vibrant streets, remnants of the once-mightiest empire on earth will surround you, infusing the atmosphere with an undeniable energy and vibrancy.

Yet, Valencia's allure transcends the Roman legacy. The old town stands as a living testament to the ebb and flow of different cultural influences that have etched their marks into what we now call material culture. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Visigoths assumed control only to be replaced by the Arab invasion. The 500-year Arab rule left an indelible legacy deeply embedded in the soul of the city. It wasn't until 1238, when King James I reclaimed Valencia, that the city once again embraced its Christian identity.

During our bike tour, you'll traverse centuries of history, passing by iconic landmarks that bear witness to Valencia's turbulent past. The 14th-century Puerta de los Serranos, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, once stood as part of the city's formidable defenses. In the heart of the old town lies the charming Plaza de la Virgen, its construction attributed to the Romans, adorned by symbolic structures like the Cathedral, the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados, and the Palace of the Generalitat. This square, with its picturesque fountain at the center, beckons for a moment of pause and photography.

Continuing the journey, you'll arrive at another gem, the Central Market. Housing over 1,200 stores, stalls, and shops, it stands as one of Europe's largest covered markets. The bustling atmosphere, filled with life, is further enhanced by the sun's gentle rays penetrating the whimsically colored windows.

Join us for this immersive experience, as we guide you through the captivating history of Valencia's old town, weaving together the threads of Roman, Visigothic, Arab, and Christian influences into a rich and vibrant narrative.
